Yaozu’s paper in Macromolecules on novel porous materials based on perylene diimides and triazines have appeared online! This exciting work (in collaboration with Jens Weber) discusses the preparation of porous and related carbon materials, and their excellent selectivity and capability for CO2 uptake.

Charl was invited by Dr Sebastien Clement, from the Institut Charles Gerhardt Montpellier‘s “Molecular chemistry and structuration of solids (CMOS)” group. The ICG is affiliated with both the CNRS and the University of Montpellier. Charl gave a talk on Friday, and spent a very interesting day with Sebastien and his colleagues in the CMOS group.
There were plenty of opportunities to discuss science and collaborations over good food and good wine in a very pleasant part of France over the rest of the weekend!
The latest publication from the Faul group has just been accepted for publication in Macromolecules! The work by Yaozu focuses on microporous polyimides for CO2 uptake.

Frank, a professor of organic materials and nanosystems at the University of Würzburg, Germany, visited Bristol on 4th March to present his exciting work on perylene diimide materials and their supramolecular assembly.
His lecture was preceded by a series of excellent talks by Bristol postgraduate researchers on topics from nanoparticle assembly at interfaces to the monitoring of micellular growth using the latest fluorescent techniques!
Congrats to Angel, who passed his viva on Wednesday! Celebrations had a Mexican flavour, as could be expected!
Well done Dr Sanchez Sanchez, who is now working with Dr Nikolay Houbenov in the molecular materials group of Professor Olli Ikkala at Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland!
Charl is in Mexico City on a short recruitment trip. He met a number of alumni at the UKAAM alumni event on Friday evening, which was a great way to connect and talk about what a great place Bristol is!
He also met many students at the British Council Recruitment Fair yesterday interested in doing a Masters by Research or PhD at the School of Chemistry. Charl will be at the fair again today, and be visiting the Institute of Chemistry at UNAM on Monday.
Bristol is a great place to live and study, and this great video of the city is certainly worth having a look at!
Prof Bert Meijer from Eindhoven, Netherlands, and leading international scientist visited Bristol on the 18th of February. Prof Meijer gave the named Timms Lecture at the Timms Symposium. Prof Fiona Meldrum and Prof Rasmita Raval also spoke, with Drew Thomson and Becky Boston (now in Sheffield) showcasing their work too!
Emily Baker, a joint student between Charl and Dek Woolfson, has had her paper on protein structure published in Nat. Chem. Bio! Her work focused on the interactions within protein alpha helices and how the dipole forces holding them together may be less influential than previously thought.

Charl spent the day at the Department of Chemistry at Monash, where he gave a talk and interacted with a number of colleagues, including Dr Rico Tabor!
He also had the chance to have a look at their brand-new and very impressive chemistry building on campus! Great day in very summery Melbourne!
