Charl is back in Beijing to teach at the Department of Chemistry, Tsinghua University. It is, as always, a pleasure to see old friends and enjoy excellent food … and, in addition, enjoy sunny weather and blue skies!

Juvaid joined the FRG last week on a short-term 3-month visit from the IIT Madras, India, on an Oxford Instruments scholarship, in conjunction with the BCFN. He will be working with Dr Andy Collins (from the BCFN) on characterising the optoelectronic properties of TANI nanowires.
Welcome Juvaid!
Last week was a busy week, with talks from our undergraduate project students Rachel, Steffan and Nick (and a celebration lunch in Cosmo afterwards!).
In addition, Prof. Julius Vancso (Twente University, the Netherlands) also visited the School of Chemistry. Peter from the FRG gave a great talk as part of the preceding mini-symposium before Prof Vancso’s fascinating talk!
Well done to all from the FRG!
Charl was invited to speak at the 11th Electromaterials Science Conference (this year held at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia).
There is an exciting line-up of speakers, including Prof. Ric Kaner (UCLA) and Prof. Frank Marken (Bath). Prof Maria Forsyth, who chairs this meeting, visited the FRG in July last year.
if you are from Indonesia, and interested to join the FRG, then please consider applying for either a Masters’ or a PhD scholarship from the Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (known as LPDP scholarships).
Deadlines for applications to the LPDP are 15th of April, 15th of July, and the 14th of October. Please contact Professor Faul if you are interested in applying.
If you are interested in applying to join the FRG as post-doc, a call for Newton Fellowships has recently opened. These prestigious fellowships provide support for relocating in the first year of the fellowship, full salary and research expenses.
Please read the Scheme Notes carefully to check if you are eligible to apply before contacting Professor Faul with an outline proposal.
Please note: the University of Bristol’s internal deadline is the 2nd of March!
Sadiyah and Tom, PhD students with the BCFN, are joining the FRG for a three-month project. They will be working with Peter, Liam and Charlie on producing some novel field-effect transistors!
Welcome!
Yumeng successfully completed her viva as the final stage of her Masters by Research degree! She will be heading back to China soon … but congratulations are in order before she does! Well done Yumeng!
Members of the FRG (who were in Bristol, and not at the MRS meeting in Boston!), joined in the FRG Christmas celebrations! Excellent cakes were prepared (and enjoyed!), and some fantastic presents were shared! See the photos for more details!
