Funding opportunities announced

A number of new funding initiatives have been announced over the last few days.  Please have a look at these opportunities if you are interested to join the Faul Research Group as post-doc or short-term visitor:

  • The Royal Society – Royal Society of Chemistry International Exchanges Award:  Thanks to the support of the Royal Society of Chemistry additional grants are available through the Royal Society – Royal Society of Chemistry International Exchanges Award for collaborations between researchers in the UK and those in Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) working on projects in the field of Chemistry. University of Bristol Internal Deadline:  27 February 2017
  • Newton Mobility Grants (with the Royal Society and the British Academy): This scheme aims to help strengthen the research and innovation capacity of researchers from partner countries by assisting them in visiting or sending staff and students to the UK and developing networks, research projects and partnerships with their UK hosts/counterparts and the wider UK research and innovation community. University of Bristol Internal Deadline: 6 March 2017 

Partner countries Royal Society: Malaysia, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey
Partner countries British Academy: Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam

Short recruitment trip to Kuala Lumpur

Charl had the pleasure of visiting Malaysia for some recruitment activities (in and around Kuala Lumpur) recently.

img_3128It was a busy time, with visits to the Ministry of Education, a local matriculation college (just outside KL), as well as a British Council Recruitment fair.  More photos from the school visit to appear shortly!

New UoB agreement with the China Scholarship Council

The University of Bristol has just finalised a new agreement with the China Scholarship Council (CSC) for 20 PhD students per year for the next 5 years. This is great news, and Bristol will benefit greatly from this new initiative!

img_2942Charl is currently in Beijing talking to prospective CSC PhD candidates at the International Graduate Scholarship Fair of the CSC.

UK-China PhD Placement programme opportunities

Are you interested in spending time in Bristol? Currently there is a call open, which provides an opportunity to Chinese nationals who are currently enrolled as PhD students at higher education institutions or research institutions in China, to spend up to 12 months in the UK.

img_2615The focus is on research areas that reflect the common interests and demands of both countries, including research related to energy. The UK-China Joint Research and Innovation Partnership Fund (known in the UK as the Newton Fund) PhD placement programme is delivered by the British Council China and the China Scholarship Council

Please contact Prof. Faul if you are interested in applying.  Please note – placements must start between January and December 2017.

Indonesian LPDP scholarships

if you are from Indonesia, and interested to join the FRG, then please consider applying for either a Masters’ or a PhD scholarship from the Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (known as LPDP scholarships).

Deadlines for applications to the LPDP are 15th of April, 15th of July, and the 14th of October. Please contact Professor Faul if you are interested in applying.

Post-doctoral fellowships – Newton Fellowships

If you are interested in applying to join the FRG as post-doc, a call for Newton Fellowships has recently opened. These prestigious fellowships provide support for relocating in the first year of the fellowship, full salary and research expenses.

Please read the Scheme Notes carefully to check if you are eligible to apply before contacting Professor Faul with an outline proposal.

Please note:  the University of Bristol’s internal deadline is the 2nd of March!

Commonwealth scholarship and Academic Fellowship opportunities

Commonwealth Scholarships for PhD study in the UK are offered for citizens of developing Commonwealth countries. In addition, Academic Fellowships (for early career academics) are also available.

These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, supporting excellence in UK higher education, and sustaining the principles of the Commonwealth.

If you are interested to apply for either a scholarship or a fellowship, then please contact Prof. Faul, and provide a CV and two academic references.

Mexico City!

Charl is in Mexico City on a short recruitment trip. He met a number of alumni at the UKAAM alumni event on Friday evening, which was a great way to connect and talk about what a great place Bristol is!

He also met many students at the British Council Recruitment Fair yesterday interested in doing a Masters by Research or PhD at the School of Chemistry.  Charl will be at the fair again today, and be visiting the Institute of Chemistry at UNAM on Monday.

Funding to collaborate with the FRG

The Royal Society (RS) have announced a number of schemes that allow for international travel and exchange, and to explore opportunities for building lasting networks, or for bilateral visits to strengthen emerging collaborations. These schemes cover travel, subsistence and a small contribution to research costs. Applicants must be from:

China, Brazil, South Africa, Mexico or Turkey

INTERNAL DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: 12th of October 2014.

Newton Mobility Grants:

This award is currently available to international researchers that want to strengthen the research and innovation capacity by visiting or sending staff and students to the UK.

Newton Advanced Fellowships:

This scheme aims to develop science and innovation partnerships that promote the economic development and welfare of developing countries.

General Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent research experience and hold a permanent or fixed-term contract in an eligible university or research institute, which must span the duration of the project. Applicants should have no more than 15 years of postdoctoral experience. Collaborations should focus on a single project involving overseas-based scientist (“the Applicant”) and UK-based scientist (“the Co-applicant”).
