Ben had his viva at the end of last week, and performed exceptionally well! A perfect way to end his PhD, and a very good reason to end the week on a high note with cake, fizz and celebrations!
Here Ben is celebrating with Simon Hall (internal examiner), Charl and Uwe Bunz (external examiner). More photos of the celebrations to follow! Well done Ben!

Talks by Pete, Carl and Uwe Bunz!
Pete shared some of his latest results in a mini symposium as part of Prof. Ryota Sakamota’s visit, while Carl gave an excellent talk before our main speaker of the day – Prof Uwe Bunz from Heidelberg.
Uwe gave a great talk on some exciting new approaches to chemical sensors (so-called “chemical tongues”). Great talks, and exciting science all around!
Busy two weeks coming up!
We have a busy two weeks coming up – with Pete and Carl speaking at two mini symposia connected to two international speakers this week [Prof Sakamoto and Prof Bunz]. These events will be followed by Ben’s viva on Friday, and another symposium next week (Prof Pietrangelo, where Ben will be speaking).
Updates and photos to follow!
Newton International Fellowship Scheme
Another important funding scheme specifically for international post-doctoral fellowships has also just been published for 2017.
- Newton International Fellowships
The scheme provides the opportunity for the best early stage post-doctoral researchers from all over the world to work at UK research institutions for a period of two years. The scheme covers the broad range of the natural and social sciences and the humanities. It also covers clinical and patient orientated research for applicants from Newton Fund partner countries. Open to candidates from any nationality. University of Bristol Internal Deadline: 10 March 2017.
Please contact Professor Faul if you are interested to apply for a Newton International Fellowship. Please ensure that you provide two letters of reference.
Funding opportunities announced
A number of new funding initiatives have been announced over the last few days. Please have a look at these opportunities if you are interested to join the Faul Research Group as post-doc or short-term visitor:
- The Royal Society – Royal Society of Chemistry International Exchanges Award: Thanks to the support of the Royal Society of Chemistry additional grants are available through the Royal Society – Royal Society of Chemistry International Exchanges Award for collaborations between researchers in the UK and those in Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) working on projects in the field of Chemistry. University of Bristol Internal Deadline: 27 February 2017
- Newton Mobility Grants (with the Royal Society and the British Academy): This scheme aims to help strengthen the research and innovation capacity of researchers from partner countries by assisting them in visiting or sending staff and students to the UK and developing networks, research projects and partnerships with their UK hosts/counterparts and the wider UK research and innovation community. University of Bristol Internal Deadline: 6 March 2017
Partner countries Royal Society: Malaysia, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey
Partner countries British Academy: Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam
Please contact Professor Faul if you are interested to apply for any of these. Please ensure that you provide two letters of reference.
Summer in Sydney?
Charl is currently in Australia, where he was invited to speak at research management workshop at Macquarie University (Sydney), and at the Australasian Colloids and Interface Society 2017 Meeting (Coffs Harbour).
Sydney was sweltering, but fortunately cooled down after a massive rain storm! Here a view of the famous sights in the harbour area, just before the storm hit!
Carl’s paper appeared online!
Carl’s paper in Advanced Optical Materials was published online today!
As the paper was published as an open access paper (like many other papers from the FRG), feel free to click on the link and download the paper free of charge! Great collaborative effort from all those involved – well done!
Research and safety lectures in Suzhou
Charl also visited Prof Bo Song at the University of Soochow, Suzhou, China. Bo, a former PhD student of close collaborator prof Xi Zhang at Tsinghua University, was the perfect host, and made sure that the stay was perfect!
Charl gave two lectures – one covering research aspects from the Faul Research Group, and one where he shared some experiences about laboratory safety from the School of Chemistry here in Bristol!
Visiting Yaozu in Shanghai
Yaozu put together a one-day symposium on advanced functional materials and supramolecular chemistry at Donghua University, Shanghai, where he now holds a professorship.
He invited a number of speakers (including Arne Thomas from Berlin, and Charl!), as well as a number of local colleagues who also spent time in Bristol as post docs.
It was a great day of exciting science, spanning fundamental science all the way through to real-word applications. Well done Yaozu!
Carl’s paper accepted!
Exciting news – Carl’s paper on switchable photonic structures from 3D printed oligo(aniline)-based materials has been accepted for publication in Advanced Optical Materials.
This project, with collaborators from the School of Physics (Henkjan and Ben) and Electronic Engineering (Daniel, Lifeng, Mike and John), explored the use of 3D printing and actively switchable redox-active oligo(aniline)-based materials to create novel tuneable 3D photonic materials. Well done to Carl, and all our collaborators!
