Busy two weeks coming up!
We have a busy two weeks coming up – with Pete and Carl speaking at two mini symposia connected to two international speakers this week [Prof Sakamoto and Prof Bunz]. These events will be followed by Ben’s viva on Friday, and another symposium next week (Prof Pietrangelo, where Ben will be speaking).

Newton International Fellowship Scheme
Another important funding scheme specifically for international post-doctoral fellowships has also just been published for 2017.
- Newton International Fellowships
The scheme provides the opportunity for the best early stage post-doctoral researchers from all over the world to work at UK research institutions for a period of two years. The scheme covers the broad range of the natural and social sciences and the humanities. It also covers clinical and patient orientated research for applicants from Newton Fund partner countries. Open to candidates from any nationality. University of Bristol Internal Deadline: 10 March 2017.

Funding opportunities announced
A number of new funding initiatives have been announced over the last few days. Please have a look at these opportunities if you are interested to join the Faul Research Group as post-doc or short-term visitor:
- The Royal Society – Royal Society of Chemistry International Exchanges Award: Thanks to the support of the Royal Society of Chemistry additional grants are available through the Royal Society – Royal Society of Chemistry International Exchanges Award for collaborations between researchers in the UK and those in Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) working on projects in the field of Chemistry. - Newton Mobility Grants (with the Royal Society and the British Academy): This scheme aims to help strengthen the research and innovation capacity of researchers from partner countries by assisting them in visiting or sending staff and students to the UK and developing networks, research projects and partnerships with their UK hosts/counterparts and the wider UK research and innovation community. Summer in Sydney?
Charl is currently in Australia, where he was invited to speak at research management workshop at Macquarie University (Sydney), and at the Australasian Colloids and Interface Society 2017 Meeting (Coffs Harbour).
Sydney was sweltering, but fortunately cooled down after a massive rain storm! Here a view of the famous sights in the harbour area, just before the storm hit!
A good start to 2017 for Bristol!
After a great Christmas, we are off to a good start for 2017. The famous “Rough Guides” have very recently voted Bristol as one of the top 10 cities in the world to visit (No. 4!).
This just confirms what we know already – Bristol is a great place to live and work in! In addition, a number of local restaurants have appeared in The Guardian’s “The 50 best breakfast places in the UK“.
Dr Hu!
Carl had passed his viva today, and we can now finally call him Dr Hu! Well done Carl! His external examiner was Prof. Bo Laursen, from the University of Copenhagen, and internal was Dr George Whittell.
Celebrations already started, and will continue later in the day! Congratulations!
Christmas party!
Time flies, and we had our annual Christmas lunch at Charl & Jacqueline’s home! Great food, great company, fantastic “Secret Santa” presents, and some great games!
We also had a Christmas Quiz – with two tasty prizes! What a way to prepare for Christmas!

Short recruitment trip to Kuala Lumpur
Charl had the pleasure of visiting Malaysia for some recruitment activities (in and around Kuala Lumpur) recently.
It was a busy time, with visits to the Ministry of Education, a local matriculation college (just outside KL), as well as a British Council Recruitment fair. More photos from the school visit to appear shortly!
