His external, Dr Hugo Bronstein from Cambridge, also gave an excellent talk in the afternoon!

Goodbye (kind of!) to the project students!
As the academic year rushes along, it was that time of the year again – the final year undergraduate research project students gave their presentations recently (after some delays due to the bad weather).
As is the tradition, we said “well done” and “goodbye” by going to Cosmo for a great all-you-can-eat lunch!
Superb viva from Dr Charlie!
Charlie (jointly supervised by close collaborator Ian Manners and Charl) defended his thesis earlier this week, with Prof Gustavo Fernandez from Muenster acting as external examiner. Charlie did a superb job, and will be wrapping up his minor corrections soon!
In addition to the viva, we also enjoyed an afternoon of student talks (with Maha from the FRG giving a great talk!), with Gustavo ending off the afternoon of exciting science with some of the detailed mechanistic work on supramolecular self-assembly from his laboratories.
Maha and Charl in London
Maha and Charl attended the “McBain Medal 2017: Watching Colloids Work” meeting in London recently. Former Bristol student and good friend of the FRG, Dr Rico Tabor (from Monash University in Melbourne) was presented with the McBain medal of the Society of Chemical Industry. As part of the one-day symposium Maha presented a poster on some of her recent work on bola-amphipihles, while Charl gave an invited talk.
Great symposium, and a fantastic opportunity to meet many of the FRG’s collaborators!
Mini symposium with Andy Weller, Mike Inkpen … and Djen!
We had the pleasure of hosting a number of visiting academics from other universities at the School of Chemistry, including Professor Andy Weller (Oxford) and Dr Mike Inkpen (Columbia/Rennes). As usual we had a mini symposium, which provided an afternoon of exciting science. Djen spoke as well, and gave a great talk on some of his recent results on dielectric actuators!
Poster prize for Christian!
Christian, a BCFN PhD student in the group (jointly supervised by Jonathan Rossiter from the the robotics CDT, FARSCOPE, and Charl), won a poster prize at the recent INASCON’17 conference, held here in Bristol. This international nanoscience conference is organised by students, for students! Christian was one of four prize winners – well done Christian!

Charl at the ACS meeting
Charl joined the ACS Fall meeting in Washington earlier this week. He spoke at two symposia – the “Metal-Containing and Metallo-Supramolecular Polymers and Materials” as well as the “Non-conventional Building Blocks in Conjugated Materials: Innovative Designs & New Applications”. It was great to meet friends, colleagues and collaborators from across the world at a great meeting!

Liam was joint winner of the recent Inorganic and Materials Section’s Final Year PhD talks! Here Liam is pictured with the two judges, Robin and Sean, and the other (joint) winner, Nicolette.

Mini symposium with Florian von Wrochem, Sony
We had the pleasure to host Dr Florian von Wrochem from Sony’s Materials Laboratories (Stuttgart, Germany). It was a great opportunity to put together an exciting symposium, with former FRG member Dr James Thomas (funded by the BCFN, and now a post-doc in Oxford) as well as Liam speaking.

Charl at the Department of Chemistry, Univ of Toronto
Charl visited the Department of Chemistry, University of Toronto, on Monday. He was hosted by Professor Dwight Seferos, and had the chance to meet a number of faculty and researchers during the day – discussing lots of very exciting science!
Charl also gave a lecture, and had the chance to showcase some recent research from the Faul Research Group!
