Members of the FRG (who were in Bristol, and not at the MRS meeting in Boston!), joined in the FRG Christmas celebrations! Excellent cakes were prepared (and enjoyed!), and some fantastic presents were shared! See the photos for more details!

Geri to Japan!
Geri, an honorary FRG group member who still kept close contact with the group (and still published a very nice paper earlier this year), came to say goodbye.
Geri received a prestigious JSPS post-doctoral fellowship, and will be working in the Supermolecules Group, with Prof Arigo and Dr Hill at MANA/NIMS, Tsukuba, Japan for 2 years! Good luck!
Heidelberg-Kyoto-Bristol Symposium 2015
A “Chemistry and Materials Session” was organised (by Charl) to take place on Friday, 6th of November, as part of the HKB Symposium 2015. With an exciting line-up of speakers, and a poster session at the end of the day it was a great opportunity to learn about local and international science!
The event ended on a high note with a speakers dinner held at the M-Shed Industrial Museum at the harbour side in Bristol.

Fascinating talk by Jan van Esch!
As Jan was visiting Bristol, he agreed to give a research seminar on some of the latest work from his group. In front of a packed seminar room Jan gave a fascinating talk on “Out-of-equilibrium biomimetic systems by dynamic and dissipative self-assembly”
Jan’s talk led to some lively discussion afterwards!
Dr Bell!
Alex had his viva on Monday… and did a great job of defending his thesis! With Prof Jan van Esch (Advanced Soft Matter Group, Delft, the Netherlands) as his external examiner, Alex had to ensure that he knew all the details of self-assembly!
Congratulations Alex – well done!
New group member Zack!
Commonwealth scholarship and Academic Fellowship opportunities
Commonwealth Scholarships for PhD study in the UK are offered for citizens of developing Commonwealth countries. In addition, Academic Fellowships (for early career academics) are also available.
These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, supporting excellence in UK higher education, and sustaining the principles of the Commonwealth.
If you are interested to apply for either a scholarship or a fellowship, then please contact Prof. Faul, and provide a CV and two academic references.
New year and (many!) new group members
New PhD student!
Djen joined the FRG as a new PhD student. He is from the Farscope Robotics CDT, and just starting on his PhD research project, jointly supervised by Prof. Jonathan Rossiter and Charl.
Welcome Djen!
Cooking at BISC!
With many new students arriving in Bristol from all over the world, members of the FRG went to BISC to help Chef Charl (and other BISC volunteers) to cook an evening meal!
It was a fun (but busy!) evening, and we managed to serve more than 120 two-course meals to new international students! Well done!
