Faul Group at Future Materials Conference 2023, Valencia, Spain

Some Faul Group members invited to speak about their work at the 4th International Conference on Materials Science & Nanotechnology last week.

The conference aims to provide an international platform to discuss emerging trends and advancement in the research and development of various classes of materials and is divided into four major themes: (i) Future Biomaterials-Biomedical, Medicine and Other Applications; (ii) Future Materials for Energy and Sustainability; (iii) Materials for Electronics, Optics, and Photonics; and (iv) Nanomaterials.

New visiting group members

Introducing visiting researcher Dr Kabir O. Oyedotun (left) from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. His research interests lie in the areas of carbon-based nanomaterials for supercapacitors and battery applications, including synthesis and characterisation. At present, Dr Oyedotun’s scientific research group develops new nanostructured carbon materials such as activated carbon, nanotubes, graphene and reduced graphene oxide, and onion-like carbon among others. He works on the hydrothermal synthesis of carbon nanostructures and composites along with applications of carbon nanomaterials for energy storage devices applications. He has co-authored and authored over 50 peer-reviewed papers in highly rated impact factor journals.

Elizaveta Bejan (right) is undertaking a summer intern project within the Faul Research Group funded by the prestigious Royce Undergraduate Research Internship Scheme before continuing her undergraduate studies on the MSci Chemistry course at the University of Bristol.

Welcome to both.

Continuing to Kyoto…

Charl continued his short trip to Kyoto University, where he visited the world-leading research laboratories of Prof Hiroshi Kitagawa. This visit was an opportunity to renew the long-standing interactions (interrupted by COVID!), and to explore new opportunities for joint symposia, student and staff exchanges, and collaborative research activities. Here Charl is with Prof Kitagawa, and his group (in front of the Clifton Suspension Bridge!).

PhD viva success celebrations

Some delayed viva success celebrations over brunch. Congratulations to (from left to right) Dr Henry E. Symons, Dr Esther J. Townsend, Dr Veronica Del Angel Hernandez & Dr Christian Romero who all successfully passed their PhD vivas at various stages during the pandemic.

Christmas gone … and 2021 off to a bumpy start!

After a very unusual year, a fun online Christmas party with some great prizes (cleaning someone else’s FH, changing the base bath, to mention some of the more interesting prizes!), we all retreated for a quiet, peaceful and restful Christmas.

So, 2021 started with another lockdown, but we are grateful for testing faciltiies and the opportunity to be back in the lab.

Wishing all a safe and healthy 2021!

Back in the office … for the first time since March!

It was Charl’s first day back in his office since March! Although Faul group members have been back in the labs since early June (with labs currently at 50% occupancy), Charl has been working from home! His office has also been used by the group as an additional safe working space.

Was great to be back in the office today, for the whole day! And to be able to enjoy the glorious sunshine view from the 6th floor!
