Mini symposium with Andy Weller, Mike Inkpen … and Djen!

We had the pleasure of hosting a number of visiting academics from other universities at the School of Chemistry, including Professor Andy Weller (Oxford) and Dr Mike Inkpen (Columbia/Rennes).  As usual we had a mini symposium, which provided an afternoon of exciting science.  Djen spoke as well, and gave a great talk on some of his recent results on dielectric actuators!

Poster prize for Christian!

Christian, a BCFN PhD student in the group (jointly supervised by Jonathan Rossiter from the the robotics CDT, FARSCOPE, and Charl), won a poster prize at the recent INASCON’17 conference, held here in Bristol.  This international nanoscience conference is organised by students, for students! Christian was one of four prize winners – well done Christian!

Here Christian is explaining his poster to Dr Ian Lindsay from the BCFN!

Charl at the ACS meeting

Charl joined the ACS Fall meeting in Washington earlier this week.  He spoke at two symposia – the “Metal-Containing and Metallo-Supramolecular Polymers and Materials” as well as the “Non-conventional Building Blocks in Conjugated Materials: Innovative Designs & New Applications”. It was great to meet friends, colleagues and collaborators from across the world at a great meeting!

Mini symposium with Florian von Wrochem, Sony

We had the pleasure to host Dr Florian von Wrochem from Sony’s Materials Laboratories (Stuttgart, Germany).  It was a great opportunity to put together an exciting symposium, with former FRG member Dr James Thomas (funded by the BCFN, and now a post-doc in Oxford) as well as Liam speaking.

Photos to follow soon!

Charl at the Department of Chemistry, Univ of Toronto

Charl visited the Department of Chemistry, University of Toronto, on Monday.  He was hosted by Professor Dwight Seferos, and had the chance to meet a number of faculty and researchers during the day – discussing lots of very exciting science!

Charl also gave a lecture, and had the chance to showcase some recent research from the Faul Research Group!

Half the FRG in Canada!

Various member of the Faul Research group were in Canada in the past week. Charlie, Liam and Horatio at the Canadian Society for Chemistry’s Conference, and Esther, Betty, Christian and Charl at the University of Waterloo’s Waterloo Institute of Nanotechnology.

Charl will also be visiting the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto, hosted by Prof. Dwight Seferos – more details to follow.

Timms Symposium 2017 … with a great line-up of speakers!

We had the pleasure of hosting the annual materials chemistry, the Timms Symposium, last week here in Bristol.

Close collaborator and good friend, Prof Xi Zhang from Tsinghua University, was the Timms Lecturer for 2017.  He was supported on the day by excellent presentations by Dr Annela Seddon (Director of the BCFN), Prof. Jean-Francois Lutz (Strasbourg), Jess Gwyther (from the Manners group) and Jason Potticary (from the Hall group).

We were also very pleased that Liz Timms, the late Peter Timms wife, could join for the afternoon, and hand over a small award to Prof Zhang!

Charl giving a talk at the Shanghai Jiaotong University

Charl visited Shanghai as part of the University of Bristol’s China Graduation activities.  He used this opportunity to visit the Shanghai Jiaotong University, where he met up with various former postdocs and friends from Bristol.

He also gave a talk, and enjoyed discussing science with Hongjing and Huibin, both postdocs from the Manners’ group!
