Veronica recently won the prize for the best poster (out of 100!) at the 17th International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Utilization – ICCDU 2019 in Aachen, Germany.

From Project to Publication … in Beijing!
Charl is currently teaching at the Yangqi campus of the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) outside Beijing (which is currently very sunny and warm!). It has been a full week of teaching, group work and interactions with a great class of 60 early career researchers from a range of scientific backgrounds and disciplines!
It seems that Charl is the tallest in the class!
1st Bristol-Tsinghua “Frontiers of Chemical Sciences” Symposium
We had the pleasure of hosting a group of colleagues from the Department of Chemistry from Tsinghua University, Beijing, here in Bristol! Great to have Prof Xun Wang, Lei Liu and others all contributing to a fantastic one-day symposium! Here a photo of speakers and those involved in the symposium.

Paper in Angewandte Chemie, with a pinch of salt!
Fantastic news! A paper from the Faul Research Group by Jie Chen (now back in China), Esther Townsend (BCFN), Veronica del Angel Hernandez, Pan, and colleagues from the Xi’an Jiaotong University in China appeared in Angewandte Chemie today!
The discovery of the Bristol-Xi’an Jiaotong (BXJ) approach, where we use simple inorganic salts to carefully tune N-containing conjugated microporous materials (CMPs), enables elegant synthetic control over the surface area, pore size distributions and function of N-containing CMPs. This approach enables the preparation of amorphous porous materials that start to challenge COFs and MOFs in properties and function!

New PhD student Basiram!
Basiram has very recently joined the Faul Research Group from the Central University of Tamil Nadu, India. He secured a prestigious National Overseas Scholarship of India for his PhD studies that will focus on the preparation of functional conjugated microporous polymers for CO2 capture and conversion.

It has been a while …
… since our last post! Apologies! Lots have been happening since the end of March, with Charl teaching at Tsinghua, visiting Jilin and attending the UoB’s graduation ceremony (see the video here!).
In addition, Basiram has joined the group as new PhD student, and Sebastien has joined as independent research fellow, with several more visitors arriving over the summer! And, as always, someone will be leaving – this time Maciek, who will be taking up an independent academic position in Bath (congrats!).
And, finally, we hope to have some good news on some big publications very soon! More news, updates and pictures to follow soon!
New Royal Society international project – with Jilin University!
Success! A Royal Society International exchange project, with funding for exchange of staff and students over two years between the research group of prof Kun Liu at the State Key Laboratory for Supramolecular Structure and Materials, College of Chemistry, Jilin University, Changchun, China, and the Faul Research Group.
This is an exciting addition to the long-standing interaction and growing collaborative efforts between the Faul Research Group and the State Key Laboratory, and fits perfectly with new undergraduate initiatives between the School of Chemistry at Bristol and the College of Chemistry at Jilin (including a new 2+2 joint degree, and a summer school for advanced undergraduate students).
Porous Materials mini symposium – with Pan as speaker!
We recently hosted an early career mini symposium, with Elvia Valadez-Sanchez (Karlsruhe), Harina Hamzah (Ting Group, Engineering) and our own Pan! Thank you to all involved for an exciting morning of science!

Prize for Grace!
Grace, who did her final year research project in the FRG, won one of two prizes for the best “materials” talk last week – what a great way to mark the end of all UG research projects!
