Chinwe, who has just finished her thesis and had her viva, is getting ready to leave Bristol and head back to Nigeria. We had the chance to celebrate with her, while saying goodbye at the same time … and of course wishing her all the best in settling in and with the expected growth of her family!

Excellent symposium organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry in London. Great opportunity to meet several leading Indian and UK Professors and Colleagues.
After two further exciting days enjoying fantastic weather in Beijing, the beautiful Tsinghua campus and the exceptional hospitality of Prof Xi Zhang, Prof Huaping Xu and many students, it is time to head back. It was a real privilige to meet the team from the RSC journal “Polymer Chemistry” at Tsinghua at their first International Symposium, as well as many German colleagues at a symposium at the National Centre for Nanoscience and Technology close by.
The next visitors from Bristol to Tsinghua will be Feli and Alex in October.
Today was the last day of a very exciting conference in Xiamen. Great speakers (except for one of them on Saturday morning!), really nice venue (nothing like an early morning jog and swim in the sea!) and a good opportunity to meet up with old friends and colleagues!

Charl arrived in hot and humid Xiamen last night. The ISACS symposium is held on the University of Xiamen‘s campus, at the Arts and Science Centre. See the photo from his on-campus hotel room of the conference venue!
The symposium starts this evening, with Charl being fortunate enough to speak early on the first full day tomorrow.
Charl was invited by Prof Wenping Hu, expert in OFETS and organic electronics, to give a talk today at the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in Beijing.
It was Charl’s first (hopefully of many) and very enjoyable visit to the Institute. Very impressive place, and many excellent researchers!
Dr Rumman Ahmed (former FRG member, and joint student with Charl and Ian Manners) visited Bristol at the end of last week. It was great to see him again, on a short holiday from Germany, where he is now working for BASF Coatings in Muenster! Here’s Rumman, looking seriously cool (as always!).
Charl is currently in China, and gave a talk this morning at the Department of Chemistry, Tsinghua University, Beijing (hosted Prof Xi Zhang, head of department).
Here he is trying his best to prepare for a difficult question! Very nice periodic table behind him!
He is spending the rest of the day in discussion with Prof Zhang and Assoc. Prof. Huaping Xu (who visited Bristol recently).
He will be visiting the Chinese Academy’s Institute of Chemistry tomorrow (visiting prof. Wenping Hu), and then off to Xiamen for the RSC conference “Challenges in Nanoscience, ISACS 9”, where he is speaking on Saturday morning.

The annual Bristol Ballon Fiesta, the biggest of its kind in Europe, was held from the 9th – 12th of August. Several members of the FRG attended and enjoyed the spectacular scenes! Enjoy the photos!
