An excellent start to 2013: Kyoto-Bristol joint symposium

The year has started on a high note with a large delegation (>100) from Kyoto University visiting Bristol on the 10th and 11th of January.  A number of parallel sessions are being held across campus, actively investigating opportunities for further collaboration. Charl is actively involved in the Materials Chemistry sessions.

Terry and Charl at PhD Recruitment Workshop, Beijing

Terry McMaster (Director, BCFN) and Charl (in his role as member of the management committee of the BCFN) attended a PhD Recruitment Workshop in Beijing, China (23-24th of November). Although very short, it was a very successful trip, with lots of contact with excellent (prospective) students!

Beijing was cold, but gloriously sunny! It was a real pleasure to visit Beijing again!

Symposium at ICeMS, Kyoto

In the final stop before starting to head back to Bristol, Merv, Peng and Charl are attending the 6th Annual Symposium on Nanobiotechnology held at ICeMS (Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences), Kyoto University. They have enjoyed the generous hospitality of Prof Kitagawa, Deputy Director of ICeMS, and visited the very impressive laboratories of Prof Tanaka.

Charl in Korea and Japan

Charl is currently on a short trip to Korea and Japan with Professors Mervyn Miles and Huaxin Peng, colleagues from the Centre for Nanoscience and Quantum Information (NSQI). He is currently in Gwangju, where he will be giving a talk at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), hosted by Prof Ji-Woong Park.

FRG members volunteer at Bisc

A number of members from the FRG helped Charl (volunteer head chef at the Bristol International Student Centre, BISC) to prepare meals for 90 people on Saturday!

Fantastic team work … and really nice hair nets! And at the end of the evening we enjoyed some of our own food, and a well-deserved break with the rest of the Bisc team!
