Apart from being famous for its chemistry, Bristol is also famous for Wallace and Gromit, two characters created by Aardman Animations! For a short period you will be able to find 80 Gromit’s unleashed and dotted around Bristol and surrounds, all in support of Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal, the fantastic Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity. With the sun shining in Bristol (!), Carl and Zhonghua have been out hunting down Gromit statues … here a few examples!

Tom’s contribution to a new paper from the Briscoe group
Tom contributed to a paper from the Briscoe group investigating the formation and structure of surfactant bilayers at the mica-water interface. This detailed study was recently accepted for publication in Soft Matter!

Seminar day!
Both Tom and Charl were out and about today, giving talks. Tom spoke at the Xmas beamline user meeting in Liverpool on his TANI-surfactant structure investigations, while Charl gave a research seminar at the School of Chemistry in Leeds.
Charl and the Bristol 10k
Charl ran the Bristol 10K race on Sunday, the 5th of May, to help raise money for local charity BISC (or Bristol International Student Centre). He ran with a team of 9 other volunteers and international students, and was very pleased to have finished the race in just over 55 minutes.

UoB Graduation ceremony in Beijing
Charl attended the University of Bristol‘s first graduation ceremony in China on Saturday, held in ChinaWorld Hotel in Beijing. There were more than 200 students who received their degrees, including Li Ye, one of the first BCFN Masters’ students!
It was wonderful to share this experience with him – congratulations Li! See also the UoB’s Weibo pages for more photos and further details (in Chinese!).
Tsinghua Xuetang lectures at an end…
After a number of lectures introducing liquid crystals and soft matter to the undergraduate students from the Department of Chemistry at Tsinghua University, Charl’s time in China is slowly coming to an end.

Charl gave a research seminar at the State Key Laboratory of Supramolecular Structure and Materials at the College of Chemistry, Jilin University today.

Pete Skabara visiting the FRG
Prof Pete Skabara, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Materials Chemistry C and based at the University of Strathclyde, visited the FRG and the School of Chemistry today.
He gave an excellent lecture (preceded by talks by Geri Echue (FRG) and Huibin Qiu (Manners group) as part of the Inorganic and Materials Chemistry Section seminar series.
