Another joint Manners/Faul paper!

Charlie, who was a joint Manners/Faul student (and now in Toronto), just had a full paper accepted in Chemistry European Journal! He had helped from Henry, from the Faul group, Xiaoming, former Manners group postdoc and Rob from the EM unit.

In this paper we show controlled solution self-assembly of an amphiphilic perylene diimide by a seeded-growth mechanism, to form colloidally stable, one-dimensional fibres with controllable lengths and low dispersities under kinetic control. Well done to all involved!

Visitor from Monash!

Luke Giles, PhD student from our collaborator Dr Rico Tabor (leading the SMaC Lab at  the School of Chemistry at Monash) and co-supervised by Charl, visited our labs recently. Rico, who did his PhD at Bristol (and spent some time working in the FRG labs) is a regular visitor – it is great to now expand our interactions with Luke’s visit (as he travels around Europe).

Here Luke is with some of the FRG members before heading out back to Melbourne again! Looking forward to the next visit!

Visiting Zhejiang University in beautiful Hangzhou

Charl was invited to visit former UoB college, Prof Huaxin Peng, now the director of the Innovative Composite Systems Institute.  He had a great time talking to colleagues  and students from the institute working in the areas of novel graphene-based materials, energy storage, and related applications.

It was a real pleasure to visit, with, further opportunities to catch up with colleagues from Bristol, as  prof Fabrizio Scarpa (from Engineering) was also visiting at the same time!

Wonderful to visit old friends – in a beautiful place!

Poster prize!

A School of Chemistry event was held to showcase the research from all early career researchers (M.Res., PhD and postdocs), with talks, a wine reception and posters!

Great news is that Veronica from our group won the poster prize! Congratulations Veronica! Here some photos of some other group members at their posters! Well done to all on a great effort, and thanks to Tom Oliver, Carmen Galan and Simon Hall for organising this event!

Visiting Xiaoyu Li at BIT

Charl had the pleasure to visit Xiaoyu, collaborator and co-author on our Nature Communications paper last year, at the Beijing Institute of Technology.

It was a great opportunity to catch up with Xiaoyu, listen to some talks from his students, and finally for Charl to give a research seminar as well. Hopefully there will be many such future interactions, and continued collaboration!

Visiting PKU!

Charl visited the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering at Peking University in Beijing today. He visited old friends Prof Qi Limin, who also spent time at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Golm, and Prof Yun Yan, who was part of the same ESF scientific network.

After Charl’s talk there were some very interesting discussion with prof Huang Jianbin concerning the FRG’s recent paper in Chemical Science!

Charlie, Liam and others publish in CEJ!

A communication entitle “1D Self‐Assembly and Ice Recrystallization Inhibition Activity of Antifreeze Glycopeptide‐Functionalized Perylene Bisimides” just appeared online at Chemistry – A European Journal, with contributions from Charlie and Liam!

The study, lead by collaborator Brendan Wilkinson (from UNE, Australia), highlights the ice recrystallization inhibition (IRI) activity of 1D self-assembled structures of glycopeptide-functionalized perylene bisimides! Well done to all involved!
